Behind the door of today’s Literary Advent Calendar is a ghostly novel chosen by Louise Walters, author of Mrs Sinclair’s Suitcase.
Louise has chosen Come Back, Lucy by Pamela Sykes.
Louise says: ‘Come Back, Lucy was published in 1973 and is the story of orphaned, old-fashioned Lucy who is sent to live with her modern, loud cousins called Patrick, Rachel and Bill. Lucy doesn’t get along with her new family, and when she meets the ghostly Alice, Lucy thinks she has found a true friend… Oh, I can’t tell you how much I love this novel. It’s one of the reasons I became a writer. Alice is among the most sinister and frightening characters in children’s literature and my heart races every time I read this nigh on perfect story. It’s a wonderful read for December and I’ve returned to it time and again. Criminally, it is out of print, but for me it remains an eternal classic and deserves to be read widely.’
