Advent Calendar – December 17th

The book treat behind today’s window on the Literary Advent Calendar is chosen by Sarah Jasmon, author of The Summer of Secrets.

Sarah has chosen The Shipping News by E. Annie Proulx.

Sarah says: ‘The Shipping News creates such a real world, though it involves some fairly fantastic elements, and has the most wonderful set of characters. But don’t watch the film: Hollywood airbrushing at its very very worst. ‘

    • Hi Pam – I know what you mean. I’m a big fan of Annie Proulx, but I thought That Old Ace in the Hole was terrible, I mean, really dull. But I thought Accordian Crimes was astonishing and I liked Postcards too & Heart Songs. I also think that Close Range is one of the best collections of short stories I’ve ever read, particularly Brokeback Mountain of course. But I wasn’t so enamoured with her next 2 collections of Wyoming stories. So I find she’s very hit and miss for me personally, though I think she is an extraordinary writer all round. Whatever she writes I will always give it a go, as if it hits the heights of TSN or AC, I’ll be a very happy reader indeed. 🙂
