‘I have always imagined that Paradise will be a kind of library’ – Jorge Luis Borges
Martine Bailey, author of The Penny Heart and An Appetite for Violets, shares her happy memories of libraries in New Zealand:
I fell in love with Kiwi libraries when I lived in New Zealand. Some are endearing sheds in the bush but Auckland has 55 fabulous neighbourhood libraries, the biggest library network in the southern hemisphere. It’s all free, with cafes, toilets, cultural events and wi-fi. This was my local at Takapuna with a sea view over to Rangitoto Island.
