Treacherous rainbows

Grey clouds wept down the wettest April since records began, drenching buildings, swelling rivers. As people wondered what they’d done to deserve this, the sun struggled through. No olive-branch ray, this, but a sickly gleam that picked out rainbows in oil films on the puddles at their feet.
