Summer is the season of Hollywood Blockbusters and it is in this frivolous spirit that The Prime Writers give way to the dream and have a go at casting their novels as films. Throughout the month of August Prime Writers will be putting forth their ideas. It will be interesting to see whether readers agree with our choices in casting beloved characters.
Prime Writer Vanessa Lafaye is one of the fortunate few to have her novel optioned for a film in the US! If all goes to plan Summertime will be hitting the theatres with the title Under a Dark Summer Sky.
I recently received the amazing news that the film/TV rights for Summertime have been optioned in the US, with the title Under a Dark Summer Sky. Naturally, I had this movie cast way before then, so it was the matter of a moment to get out my list.
As the book is an ensemble piece, it requires a team of great character actors. First, as the disillusioned African-American WWI veteran, Henry, there’s Chadwick Boseman, lately seen as Black Panther in ‘Captain America’. For the formidable Mama and voodoo priestess Selma, I would want Oprah and Queen Latifah, of course. For the troubled Deputy Sheriff, Dwayne Campbell, John C Reilly’s lived-in face would be perfect. January Jones (in a fat suit) would be ideal for former beauty queen Hilda, and Brad Dourif for Doc (if he doesn’t mind playing another doctor, after doing the same in ‘Deadwood’). If he’s not up for it, then Tim Roth would be my second, and he does a good American accent. Lastly, most importantly, there is the character of young Missy, whose life has been on hold since Henry went away to war. I would choose Amber Riley from ‘Glee’, who has just the right combination of spunk and vulnerability, and could really belt out the title song!
