Biography:
Jason Hewitt was born in Oxford and lives in London. He has a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and English from the University of Winchester and an MA in Creative Writing from Bath Spa University. After completing his degree he toiled for many years in a bookshop in Oxford before moving to London where he worked for a number of professional and academic publishers.
His debut novel, The Dynamite Room, was long listed for the Desmond Elliott Prize for New Writing, 2014, and the Authors’ Club Best First Novel Award, 2015. It was also selected for the Barnes & Nobel Discover Great New Writers 2015 campaign. His second novel, Devastation Road, will be published by Scribner in the UK in July 2015.
He is also a playwright and actor. His first full-length play, Claustrophobia premiered at Edinburgh Fringe in August 2014 as well as the St James’ Theatre, London. As an actor he has performed major roles in a number of plays including Pericles, A Christmas Carol, The Last Days of Judas Iscariot, The Merchant of Venice and King Lear (directed by Sir Jonathan Miller).
Jason is currently writer-in-residence at Abingdon School, has given guest lectures at a number of secondary schools and universities, and is a regular at literary festivals.
When not writing he is an avid grower of his own veg (to varying degrees of success) and a self-confessed biscuit junkie.

Literary themes: Historical fiction, World War Two, speculative fiction, memory and fiction, unusual character pairings, music and fiction.
General themes: Marketing your novel, carrying out research (including historical research), writing for different mediums (including playwriting), the relationship between the page and the stage. As an actor and playwright, Jason can also talk about the crossover between writing fiction, playwriting and acting. He is also well-versed on talking about ‘that difficult second novel.’
Jason has recently been a writer-in residence at an independent secondary school working with students aged 11-18 (and staff), and has given A Level English Literature guest lectures and lessons around the country. He is also able to provide short story and fiction workshops to festivals, including workshops on historical research.
